Akeau  Unahalekhaka
RN, Ph.D.(Epidemiology)

She graduated Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science and Ph.D. in Epidemiology. She also received Certificate in Surveillance and Applied Epidemiology for HIV and AIDS from CDC, USA and Certificate in Statistical, Epidemiological and Operational Methods Applied in Medicine and Public Health from University of Brussels, Belgium. She worked for Ministry of Public Health, Thailand in Division of Epidemiology, as a Disease Control Officer for 14 years. She became professor at Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University since 1992.
Her academic activities during the past years included scientific committee in   National Seminar on Epidemiology, chairman of the Northern Regional Epidemiology Board, thesis advisor of more than 50 Master degree students in Infection Control Nursing and Public Health, committee of Infection Control Nursing Branch, Master of Nursing Science (Infection Control Nursing), Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University, guest lecturer of undergraduate students of Mahidol University, Silapakorn University, Pa-yap University, Chiang Mai,  Prince of Songkla University. Srithanya Nursing College,  and Army Nursing College.

She was a guest speaker in Prevention and Control of Nosocomial Infections for The Institute of Hospital Quality Improvement & Accreditation (HA-Thailand), 50 General and Regional Hospitals, 27 Community Hospital, 3 Royal Thai Army & Air force Hospitals, 6 University Hospitals, 13 Private Hospitals, 8 Hospitals and 6 Institutes of Department of Medicine, Ministry of Public Health, 2 Hospitals under Bangkok Metropilitan Hospital, 3 Maternal and Child Health Hospitals and Hospitals under other Ministry, CSSD society of Thailand, ICN society of Thailand, companies and etc.

She is currently a consultant in Infection Control of many hospitals in Thailand, Society of Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) of Thailand and Bureau of Health System Development, Department of Health Service Support, Ministry of Public Health.

She was an editorial board of Ministry of Public Health guidelines: Guidelines for Developing Provincial Surveillance Network, Guidelines for HIV Sentinel Surveillance in Thailand, and Guidelines for AIDS and HIV infection definition.
She is currently an editorial council members of The International Journal of Infection Control (IJIC) of the IFIC and Editorial Advisory Board of the Clinical Governance: An International Journal.

She wrote her own books in Infection Control since 1995 as followed: Nosocomial Infections Surveillance, Prevention of Nosocomial Infections, Disinfection and Sterilization, Knowledge in Disinfection and Sterilization, Knowledge in Prevention of Nosocomial Infection, Nosocomial  Infections : Epidemiology  and  Prevention,  and Surveillance and Outbreak Investigation of Nosocomial Infections. She translated the IFIC book “Infection Control: Basic Concepts and Training” (2nd Edition) into Thai. About 4000 copies of this book were distributed throughout Thailand.

She firstly participated the IFIC congress as a panelist in “ Tsunami in South East Asia” in Istanbul, Turkey. She presented her work on “The Application of Collaborative Quality Improvement Concept in Prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in 18 Hospitals, Thailand” in The 7th IFIC congress in Stellenbosch, South Africa and was awarded “The Best Oral Free Paper Presentation”. At the 8th IFIC congress in Budapest, Hungary, she presented her work on “Glass particles contamination in single dose ampoules”. At this congress she was accepted to be IFIC Board member.
