1987 Head of Dept. of Clinical and Molecular Microbiology at the Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb .

From 1993 Professor of Microbiology, Medical School, University of Zagreb.

From 1998 Head of Reference Centre for Hospital Infections of Ministry of Health, Republic of Croatia.

Publications: about 35 papers in the last 15 years in indexed national and international journals, on her main fields of interest (hospital infections, infections in immunocompromised patients, bacterial resistance problems). Published the 'Textbook of Medical Bacteriology and Mycology for Medical Students'.

Organisation: three Croatian congresses of Clinical Microbiology with international participation (1993, 1996, 1999), two ESCMID postgraduate courses: Brijuni 1996 and Dubrovnik 2000, ten CME courses in Clinical Microbiology and Hospital infections (1990 - 2001).

1999 Working at Reference Centre for Hospital Infections, Ministry of Health, Republic of Croatia, Smilja became the member of IFIC.

IFIC activities are as follows:

Postgraduate CME Course "Control of infections in intensive care units".

Elected as a Director in IFIC Board, for the period 2002-2006.

2002 Planned activity: Participation in a one-day Course "Control of hospital infections" in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
